RailAmerica, Inc. is an owner and operator of short line freight railroads in North America and an owner and operator of regional freight railroads in Australia and Chile. The Company owns, leases or operates a diversified portfolio of 49 railroads with approximately 12,900 miles of track located in the United States, Australia, Canada, Chile and Argentina. Through its diversified portfolio of rail lines, the Company operates in numerous geographic regions with varying concentrations of commodities hauled. In addition to its railroad operations, the Company has historically generated gains through asset sales. Through its various North American railroads, the Company owns 8,604 miles of track and 63,400 acres of land. The Company continually reviews its portfolio of railroads and looks to sell entire railroads, portions of railroads or underutilized real estate where holding such assets does not meet its internal criteria.
